We collected a frog last Sunday from Kewarra Beach that had early signs of
chytrid fungus. This is unusual for Cairns suburbs but a graphic
reminder that even in the far north, chytrid can be a problem in the
winter months. This is especially so on the Atherton Tablelands.
Chytrid is easily treatable - but without treatment, a frog will die.
Watch for any frogs soaking in water during the day or any frog away
from water that is sitting in the open without moving when approached or
touched. Use gloves or a plastic bag over your hands to pick it up, put
in a container with air holes, bring indoors and then phone the frog
hospital right away on (07) 4006-3784.
